This past week proved to be a chaotic one for Ohio high school football, especially for the teams at the top of the rankings. Three of the top five teams, including the former No. 1, suffered losses to out-of-state opponents, causing a massive reshuffling of the rankings. As a result, three new teams have made their debut in the top 25, showcasing the state’s deep and competitive talent pool.
The biggest change in this week’s Ohio high school football top 25 rankings comes at the very top. The St. Edward Eagles (2-0) seized the No. 1 spot after a dominant 48-28 victory over Delbarton (New Jersey). They were the only top-5 team to win their non-Ohio matchup, proving their mettle and earning their place at the pinnacle of the rankings.
Meanwhile, the former No. 1 Archbishop Moeller Fighting Crusaders (1-1) fell to Chicago Mt. Carmel (Illinois) in a tight 43-42 contest. Despite the loss, their strong performance against a three-time defending Illinois state champion kept them from a significant drop. Likewise, Archbishop Hoban (1-1) and Avon (1-1) also suffered losses to out-of-state teams, leading to their descent in the rankings.
The shakeup didn’t just affect the top of the list. Three new teams, Upper Arlington (2-0), Kings (2-0), and Pickerington North (1-1), have all entered the rankings after impressive wins. Notably, Kings’ victory came against a previously ranked opponent, highlighting their potential as a rising force.
Looking ahead, Ohio football fans have a can’t-miss matchup this week as No. 4 Glenville (2-0) travels to face No. 8 Avon (1-1). This top-10 showdown will not only have major implications for the rankings but also feature two of the state’s most talented squads.
