The initial Virginia high school football rankings for the regular season are here, and there have been some interesting changes. Despite both losing their season openers, last year’s top two teams, Oscar Smith and Maury, hold their positions at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Their losses were to nationally and regionally ranked powerhouses, which speaks to their continued strength.

Newcomers Saint Christopher’s School and Midlothian have also made a splash, debuting in the poll after impressive victories over previously ranked opponents. Meanwhile, Stone Bridge has made a significant leap to No. 11 after a shutout win against a top-10 team, while James Madison, last year’s Class 6 state runner-up, dropped to No. 12.

Get ready for an exciting weekend of action as many of the top teams face off. The most anticipated matchup is a top-five showdown between No. 2 Maury and No. 4 Varina on Friday night.
