The Mitchell High School football team has recently received the schedules for the 2024 and 2025 seasons from the South Dakota High School Activities Association. In 2024, the team will have three of their first four games at home, a change from the previous season where they had back-to-back road games to start. The season will kick off at Joe Quintal Field on the weekend of Aug. 30 against Douglas, followed by a game against Huron in Mitchell on Sept. 6. This marks the earliest rivalry contest between the Kernels and Tigers since 2007, as the game will be played in September for only the fourth time since 2006.
In 2024, the Kernels will have their first road game on September 13th in Spearfish, followed by a home game against Brookings on September 20th. They will then go back on the road to play Tea Area on September 27th and travel to Aberdeen on October 4th. The regular season will wrap up with a home game against Brandon Valley on October 11th and Watertown on October 18th, followed by a road game at Yankton on October 24th.
Mitchell will not be playing Pierre during the regular season for the first time in years, which means they will miss out on a matchup with the reigning seven-time Class 11AA state champions and Eastern South Dakota Conference rivals. Additionally, the Kernels will not be facing Sturgis in Class 11AA, as they have met nine times in as many seasons. The specific dates for Mitchell’s games may change, as some games have been moved to accomodate officiating crews. In the 2025 schedule, the Kernels will play three of their first four games on the road and close with three of its final five games at Joe Quintal Field.
